Sustainability
We assume responsibility for our impact on people, the environment and communities and societies in which we operate.
By digitally preserving cultural heritage and other valuable information, Piql also creates value for the distant future and helps organisations do the same.
Our guiding principles
Create sustainable technology
Known around the world as a green data solution, Piql’s unique approach to long-term data storage means that once information is stored it is there permanently. Other digital preservation solutions require migration to new technologies every few years, resulting in significantly more energy and waste.
piqlFilm can also be stored in the Arctic World Archive, where the natural climatic conditions allow storage with no electricity required.
Our main goal when developing piqlFilm was to create something that lasts, that requires no maintenance and can carry valuable information into the future. Having achieved this, we continue to work on improving it and developing complementary technology with the same focus.
Our recently released piqlReader, won a DOGA design award which considers social, environmental and economic value.
Innovate and enhance our technology and services
We will never stop innovating and improving our products and services to meet existing needs that also meets future needs. We are currently running a number of research and development projects to enhance the capacity and longevity of our product which will result in significantly less resources used in the future.
MINIMISING WASTE
In addition to recycling, Piql also strives to minimise waste, especially as film development historically produced toxic waste.
Piql uses a modern processor that replenishes the chemicals and therefore does not require management of hazardous waste.
Ruined chemicals or at end-of-life, will require hazardous waste management (however this is outside normal operation).
Traditionally the photographic process uses a lot of water. Piql strives to keep the water consumption as low as practically possible.
Piql also recovers 95% of the silver from the photographic developing process, which helps in two ways: it removes a heavy metal from waste-water (rendering it non-toxic) and the silver can be reused and repurposed.
Piql regularly monitors its waste-water to ensure compliance with regulations and is approved by Drammen Municipality to discharge the waste-water into the municipal system.
RESPONSIBLE SOURCING OF MATERIALS
Piql works with a very small number of film manufacturers and on several occasions, have partnered with suppliers on projects to produce a better product with regards to performance and impact.

REUSE AND RECYCLE
Wherever possible, Piql minimises the use of materials and reuses and recycles to the greatest extent possible in our development and delivery of products and services.
This includes recycling everything from food packaging, to parts and products (i.e. unusable film is recycled, silver is recovered from the developer for reuse, and there is a strict recycling policy in the office).
MINIMISE OUR IMPACT
We want to have the smallest impact on the environment as possible so we have taken measures to reduce energy use in our office by installing more efficient appliances. We also have a programmable thermostat to reduce energy use when the office is empty, and unused equipment is unplugged.
We avoid unnecessary travel by using video conferencing and public transport wherever possible.
Fair and trustworthy
We value diversity and have a zero tolerance for any form of corruption and secret commissions. We team up with like-minded partners for joint allowances that share our commitment to ethical principles and our values.
All representatives conduct business activities with co-workers, stakeholders, clients and partners with respect for all people, regardless of similarities or differences
All recruitment is decided based entirely on merit and Piql does not engage in or support any from of discrimination.
Our contribution against the UN Sustainability Goals
The UN has provided a framework where every individual, business and government can directly contribute to global sustainability. Piql is committed to all 17 goals, however we have the most impact against goals 9, 12, 13 and 16.
Piql helps establish a robust infrastructure for secure, long-term data storage for the benefit of all nations, organisations, companies and individuals. Piql continues to contribute to innovation in our fields of digital preservation and long-term information storage and is currently involved in a number of significant research and development projects along with two commercialisation projects that actively seek to innovate towards a sustainable future. We believe that technological advances in the field of data longevity, data storage and digital preservation can have huge implications for the way the world currently manages information. Innovation in these areas can improve energy efficiency, e-waste, data loss and access to authentic information. Piql’s global business model enables us to share our innovation with local organisations around the world, train and equip them for success and support their sales processes, for an inclusive approach to business.
Piql has a continued focus on ensuring we minimise our use and impact. We have taken measures, such as lifecycle analysis, to understand our current footprint to find opportunities to improve. Data storage mediums in general create a significant amount of waste, as they are decommissioned every few years as data is migrated to a newer device. Over a long storage period, necessary for some types of information, this can result in significant amounts of special and harmful waste. Piql offers an alternative technology that has been designed to last for centuries if necessary –without the need to migrate information, resulting in very little waste. Piql also uses modern chemicals to process piqlFilm that has reduced harmful waste, and is working to increase the data capacity of piqlFilm to reduce existing impact even further. Piql also works closely with carefully selected suppliers to ensure we are developing and delivering responsible technology.
Data centres are major consumers of electricity with and transport and storage of digital data accounting for approximately 2% of the world's total electricity consumption. piqlFilm is a permanent storage medium that does not consume energy in the same way as a storage medium that requires power (hard drives, magnetic tapes, etc) to keep the data alive. With a 500+ year perspective, this means significant energy savings. Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) conducted by Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok compared the storage of 1 TB of data on piqlFilm against 1 TB of data on hard disk for 500 years. The study found that the Global Warming Potential (GWP) of Hard Drives is 38 times higher than piqlFilm. In practice, this means that Piql's migration-free storage is ""greener"" than hard drive storage after only 1.5 years. Piql has a continued focus on enhancing its technology and is working to increase the data capacity (to allow for more data to be stored in each frame) and the longevity of the film.
Data on piqlFilm cannot be altered or overwritten, therefore ensuring that data cannot be manipulated, altered or deleted, as it can be for electronic data storage (hard disk) and magnetic tape. This helps to ensure the legal protection of organisations and individuals and to prevent corruption and crime (such as fraud). Piql also values diversity in its people and has zero tolerance for any form of corruption. Piql only partners with like-minded organisations that share our same ethical views and values. Piql views diversity as an asset and people are welcome regardless of gender, nationality, age, religion or physical ability – or any other aspect of diversity. Piql employees and Partners must conduct business activities with co-workers, clients, stakeholders and business partners with respect for all people without regard to differences or similarities. Piql promotes and hires people solely on the basis of their abilities and skills. Piql employees and Partners should not engage in or support discrimination when hiring, compensating, training, promoting, terminating or retiring based on gender, age, ethnic and national origin, caste, religion, disability, sexual orientation, political affiliation or union membership (Piql Code of Conduct).
Through these partnerships, Piql assumes a larger responsibility for improving and offering access to our sustainable technology and innovation on a global scale. We continue to develop existing and new partnerships towards this goal. Encouraging greener thinking and enabling greener practices in our network of partners is also a core focus of Piql. While we seek out like-minded partners, we also aim to influence and equip all in our network to reduce their impact and implement greener practices. In addition, we are pursuing specific partnerships that make a positive contribution to sustainable development. By working together, we hope to improve our overall contribution, and those of our partners, towards realising the sustainable development goals.
