Largest bank in South America chooses Piql

Itaú Unibanco is a major financial institution based in Brazil with over 5,000 branches in Latin America and 5,119 offices worldwide.

CHALLENGE

Financial institutions have unique archival challenges managing both contemporary and historical content, in a variety of mediums and archival management systems.

As one of the largest banks in the world, Itaú Unibanco had a number of data management challenges with data spread across separate systems and formats and with different protocols for digitally born content than for digitised or analogue content. In the past, the bank has maintained a large archive of client information preserved on microfilm and microfiche. This presented management challenges, for example, as microfilm and microfiche must be carefully scanned, frame by frame, access is a slow and resource intensive access process.

This decade old approach also posed risk to the data as reels were handled regularly exposing them to wear and tear.

Itaú Unibanco needed a solution that would modernise its archive, offering sustainability and that could be integrated with existing IT infrastructure.

For us at Itau it is a new reality… This is a great transformation and a change in paradigm.

SOLUTION

After an extensive search for a solution that would meet the needs of such a vast archive, Itaú Unibanco has chosen Piql’s purpose-built archival solution.

Piql’s unique ability to meet our clients wherever they are on the journey to an optimised sustainable archive was an attractive feature for Itaú Unibanco. Piql will first provide high quality and efficient digitisation of all microfilm and microfiche records (with optical character recognition and enhanced automated metadata extraction).

All data will then be ingested into their existing digital archive, prior to storing all data on the world’s most sustainable digital medium – piqlFilm. All other physical storage mediums become obsolete over time, requiring data migrations to ensure files remain accessible. Digital information stored on piql-Film will never need migration and can be accessed no matter how long it is stored for.

This tailored solution complements the existing archive, offering similar longevity and security.
